What are Shoestring Straps?
Also known as Spaghetti Straps, shoestring straps are very thin straps that are used to support a top or dress at the shoulders, and perfect for camisoles and sundresses. This sort of strap can be challenging because of the delicate nature of this type of garment though!
In this tutorial, Tammy Silver shows you how to sew shoestring straps using a loop turner! This sewing tool will make sewing this type of straps much easier to sew!

Tools you will need:
- Fabric
- Loop turner
- Scissors
- Pins
Collect all the tools you will need for this project, including a loop turner. Loop turners are used to turn narrow strips of fabric to the right side.
Steps to sew
Measure out the length of the straps. You can decide this yourself or follow the instructions on your sewing pattern. My straps measure 20in in length by 2in wide.

Place each strip of fabric right sides together and pin in place along the edge.

Take the fabric to your machine and sew using a half inch seam allowance. Repeat this step for the second strap.

To reduce the bulk, trim the seam allowance. This will enable the straps to lay flat once it has been turned to the right side and ironed, giving you a professional finish. Be careful not to cut into the stitch line.

Loop turners have two hooks. A curved hook at the top and a diagonal hook slightly below. Open the bottom hook so it is fully open (as shown in the righthand image).
TIP: If you don’t have a loop turner, you could also use a needle and thread to pull the strap to the right side.

Place the hook through the hole within the strap until the top of the hook appears through the other side.

Place the bottom hook through the fabric and close the hook. After this, close the hook and gently push the fabric through.

Place the bottom hook through the fabric and close the hook. After this, close the hook and gently push the fabric through.

Once the fabric is through to the other side, you can remove the loop turner and pull the fabric through until the strap is completely on the right side out. Repeat this step for the second strap.
Use your iron to press the strap nice and flat to finish, and you’re ready to sew them to your top or dress.
